Choose Your Interior Book Style

For your ebook AND print book, the interior book style determines:

Whether text is justified
If text is to be hyphenated
If first paragraphs are indented or set off with an extra space
The look and placement of your chapter number and title
The style of the first paragraph of each chapter
The style of any text ornament you place between chapter segments
The look of the first paragraph after an ornamental break.

FOR PRINT BOOKS ONLY, you can ALSO choose:

The font
The font size
The line spacing
The header and footer style
And whether you want all chapters to begin on the right-hand page.

NOTE: Some of the first paragraph and ornamental break styles are available only with certain header styles. These are marked appropriately below.

Next, choose your first paragraph style

The first paragraph style determines the look of the first paragraph of each chapter.

These first-paragraph styles are available with all header styles:

This fancy drop caps first-paragraph style is available with H-M, H-A, H-K, and H-P:

This sans-serif caps first-paragraph style is available with H-T, H-P, and H-C:

This antique drop caps first-paragraph style is available with H-O:

Then, choose your ornamental break style

If you have breaks within a chapter, you can add a text ornament or leave it blank. The choice is yours. You can add a text ornament of your own (for an extra charge of $25).

Finally, choose your first paragraph after break style

If you have breaks within a chapter, choose how you would like to style the first paragraph after the the break. The only consistent typesetting convention we’e been able to find is that this first paragraph should NOT be indented. Other than that, it’s up to you.

Style Choices For PRINT Only

Choose a trim size for your book.

This determines the length and width of your printed book. Examples to the right show proportions, not exact measurements. The BEST way to get a truer idea of book trim size is to measure some actual books in your library.

All chapters begin on right-hand page?

Starting all chapters on the right hand page is a literary tradition, but not a hard and fast rule. It will result in some blank pages on the left-hand side. The first chapter of your book will ALWAYS begin on the right-hand page, even if you select “NO” for this style choice.
